As a movie that is based on one person traveling around America and firing people- I must admit I was a little hesitant about going to see this one.

However as soon as the opening credits were finished and the first scene started I knew this was going to be a good movie.

I have seen in different reviews this movie listed as a comedy, but I am pretty sure that, that would not be.

The genre I would place it in purely because of what the movie is based around. “Up in the Air” is a well- acted and timely film from writer/ director Jason Reitman.

George Clooney’s performance as Ryan Bingham is fantastic- he is a man with a job no-one else wants but is exceptionally good at it. Clooney doesn’t over play the character but he has the perfect blend of charm and humanity to pull off what his character does. It is an understated performance that is almost to subtle to be recognized as brilliant.

Of the two leading ladies it is Anna Kendrick that has the showier part and she excels at holding her own against the seasoned professional that Clooney is, while also bringing an unexpected depth to her character. Vera Farmiga has been cast perfectly in this role and plays it perfectly, as a fellow traveler who can match Clooney’s gold membership cards one for one and who shares the same attitude about the joys of business travel.

For the scenes involving the firings Reitman put out ads as he was searching for real people who had lost their jobs. You can see he wanted to create very moving and honest portraits of human beings, not just numbers that need to be crunched and he succeed.

“Up in the Air” features everything that is clever and great about smart adult movies. It shows that Reitman continues to be an impressive film maker who can be counted on to serve up films that connect with the audience.

Fantastic cast, intelligent writing and a timely and touching storyline make “Up in the Air” a film you wont forget about the moment you leave the cinema.
