A huge hit on the teen-horror circuit in 1978, it was directed by Joe Dante, one of the better directors of that slasher era and it became a cult movie. Now it's back, with a very similar plot: it is summer vacation time in Arizona. There is a lakeside resort that is popular with the kids. An earth tremor occurs that hardly anyone notices, but a fissure in the lake floor has opened and through that crack come shoals of hungry, prehistoric piranhas.
This remake is in 3D to maximise the shock value and it works well, but director Aja has added another fun layer. It's a spot-the-has-been quiz. As the waters churn red, you will spot old stars like Richard Dreyfuss, Elizabeth Shue and the perpetually crazy scientist, Christopher Lloyd, hamming it up in the hammiest movie of the year. It's a nostalgia gimmick that works like a charm. It goes without saying that this film is utter nonsense, but beautiful locations, hot bodies and tons of badass fish add up to a great popcorn movie.
