35 Shots of Rum, (Three and 1/2 stars) Part of the Contemporary French Masters Spotlight. In French with English subtitles. MT. 8 p.m. April 11, Aperture 1.
"35 Shots of Rum" is a much quieter movie than its title implies. It focuses on the relationship between widower Lionel (Alex Descas) and his daughter Josephine (Mati Diop). He's a man of few words who works as a conductor for the commuter-rail system. She's a student who ponders global issues. Both have admirers within their apartment building — Lionel has been loved for years by Gabrielle, a chain-smoking, taxi driver whose unrequited affection for him is poignant, bordering on pathetic. And Josephine has caught the eye of handsome neighbor Noe. But both seem indifferent to their suitors. Their father-daughter bond is so strong that few have been able to penetrate their world. But that begins to change, and director Claire Denis explores what that means for both. There's not a lot of action here. The drama comes from the everyday moments that the characters share. It's an understated film, but one worth seeing.
