Ashutosh Gowariker is responsible for re-introducing India on the Oscar map. After his blockbuster Lagaan bagged its Oscar nomination, Gowariker went on to make critically well-recieved films, Swades and Jodha Akbar. The director tells us which films inspire him, and are his favourite. Over to Ashutosh:
This is a tough one -- to select my Five All Time Best Indian movies. First and foremost, and on top my list is Mughal-e-Azam. I would deem this 1960 classic as the one most representative of Hindi cinema.
The greatest thing here is its screenplay, written by four writers, especially because we know that Anarkali did not exist, so the way director K Asif created and weaved the relationship between Salim and Anarkali is very beautifully done. Great songs, humongous sets, and one of the greatest love stories.
